Cognitive Behavior - Should Change Otherwise.

Cognitive behavior is a theory that's behaviors and emotions are result of negative patterns of thinking which have been adapted over a period of time. There are individuals who are gripped mostly with negative thoughts due to various factors and the circumstances through which they have gone through in their life. Based on the family, society, religious beliefs and the circumstances in which the person has been brought up or has been living, personality of an individual develops.

 There is nothing right or wrong about this, but the point is how it affects the individual. A person who has seen very tough times and has been living with meagre resources will always think it is too hard to achieve something big. Thus, his interest and motivation in doing something will always be on the lower end of the scale. This is not an ailment or disease and it cannot be concluded that the person has some mental illness. This is simply based on the negative pattern of thinking that the person has developed over years. This can be changed and improved so that the person's negative cognitive behavior starts taking a positive turn. Understanding the patterns of thinking, how it impacts the behavior and emotions to strike a balance between them is called as Cognitive Behavior Therapy.


Purpose of explaining it here is to give an opportunity to the readers to realize that people with lower level of motivation, due to negative thinking or other reasons, can be enhanced. Guiding a person to undergo Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) will certainly help and this should not be taken in the sense that person has lost his or her mental balance.

CBT is typically used to treat certain mental conditions, such as anxiety and depression. Therapists can help people who go through depression and anxiety due to too much of negative thoughts. They can help recognize and challenge irrational beliefs that are influencing the behaviors and feelings of the persons. By learning to identify these thoughts, a person can start taking a more realistic view of a situation. CBT is short term therapy and by going through this a person can start learning how to recognize and address these automatic thoughts on his own, which will lead to his positive thoughts and action. 


All organizations have the process of performance review annually or half-yearly and the managers set some goals & objectives at the beginning of the year. What is mostly missing, almost in all cases and in every organization is that the managers do not discuss with the individual and set the expectations right and also do not give positive feedback on a regular basis. As a result the performance appraisal mechanism does not prove to be an effective means of motivating employees. My experience so far, in most organization it simply remains as a means of giving a minimum or not giving a salary hike to the employees.


A big question for all of us comes up that we must be able to answer is how do we make this theory work at our workplace for the benefit of the team. Though, there is nothing absolute and there could be various factors that can help in bringing this into practice in our organization.

Every individual, however skilled and experienced, need feedback in order to improve further. There is always a scope for some improvement and learning. Some people feel embarrassed and don't take feedback in a positive manner, which is something that all individuals need to work upon. For some people it is difficult to accept any adverse comments or situation. The hard fact is sooner they learn to accept the things the way they come, better they are in a position to improve and work on changing the situation. For those who are struggling, we must at first give positive feedback on their level of effort and give constructive feedback on how they can improve their performance.
